Abstract
Scope and Contents of the Materials
This collection contains documents, photographs, letters, newspapers, sound recordings, motion picture film, and videotape recordings from the Denton Chamber of Commerce (1938-1998). Several documents and letters detail the formation of Denton Industries, Inc., a coalition of Denton businesses to support Denton's expanding infrastructure from 1942 to 1978. Documents and other promotional materials related to the 1960's "Dynamic Denton" and "Top of the Golden Triangle" campaigns are also found in this collection. The sound recordings include 20 reel-to-reel audiotapes, 3 vinyl records, and 1 compact cassette. The motion picture film and video recordings include 26 reels of 16mm motion picture film and 1 VHS videocassette. The majority relate to the Dynamic Denton promotional campaign and include 4 prints of the film "Dynamic Denton." The primary target audience for this film was industrial prospects across the country. Produced and directed by Joe Camp for advertising company Norsworthy-Mercer, Inc., production began around the city of Denton in February, March, and April, 1968. The soundtrack was the 1968 promotional record produced by the Chamber of Commerce, Dynamic Denton in Sound and Music. The film showed North Texas State University students and alumni (Frank de Benedetto, Phyllis George, Harland Wright, Cathy Muirhead, Mike Moon, and La Juana Roth) in various locations around the city. The completed film was shown to the Chamber in the spring of 1968 and had its local debut at the Campus Theater in downtown Denton, Texas in August 1968. Screenings of the film were accompanied by a musical performance by some of the cast members. Also found in this collection are home movies documenting the city of Denton (1938-1971). Among these home movies are films highlighting the businesses of downtown Denton, the 1938 Denton County Fair, and visiting politicians like Ben Barnes. All of the film and video have been digitized and will be available online through the Portal to Texas History. Please see indvidiual item descriptions.Collection Historical Note
