Charldean Newell was born in 1939 on October 14 to Charles T. Newell and Mildred Dean Looney Newell of Fort Worth, Texas.

As an only child, she stayed in Fort Worth and went to Carter-Riverside High School.

After her graduation, Charldean Newell went on to North Texas State College (now known as the University of North Texas) were she received a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism in 1960 and a Master’s degree in government in 1962.

She later received a Doctorate in government from the University of Texas at Austin in 1968.

In 1965, Charldean Newell returned to UNT as a member of the political science department faculty.  During her time at the University of North Texas, she mentored hundreds of students and colleagues and served in various other official capacities.  Such positions included being a Chairperson of the Political Science department, a twice serving Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, a Special Assistant to the Chancellor for Planning, the founding Executive Director of Special Projects for the Federation of North Texas Area Universities, and was co-author of four books and more than 50 articles, chapters and monographs.  She later retired in 2002 after 37 years on faculty at UNT.
