Abstract

Series 1 of this collection is primarily comprised of materials from the Miniature Book Society Grand Conclave meetings. Additionally, there are papers belonging to various book publishers, articles and newsletters about miniature books, and examples of artists books by Ed Hutchins. Series 2 houses the miniature keepsakes and artifacts that correspond to the Grand Conclave meetings. In this context, keepsakes are souvenirs of miniature book enthusiasts and book presses that are created to illustrate the prowess and appreciation of conclave attendees.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection includes brochures, photographs, news articles, correspondence, and handmade miniature book examples (known here as keepsakes). The materials housed in this collection span decades and borders; from California to Virginia, Canada, and even Glasgow, Scotland.

Many of the materials in series 1 depict the schedules and events for each Grand Conclave and illuminate what it was like to attend the conferences. The keepsakes and artifacts associated with the conclaves are excellent examples of ingenuity and creativity in the book-making field. From books made of buttons with accordian-style pages to minuscule scrolls that require a magnifying glass to read, this collection offers a wide variety of miniature book samples and appreciations.

Collection Historical Note

The Miniature Book Society was founded in 1983 as a non-profit organization dedicated to the appreciation and promotion of miniature book arts. Its membership has expanded to an international status and the society is constantly welcoming new enthusiasts. In 2017, its Board of Governors included Stephen Byrne, Jim Brogan, Gail Faulkner, Cathie Abney, Darleen Cordova, Melinda Brown, Lori Dekydtspotter, and Michael Garbett. The Society produces its own journal, the MBS Newsletter, as well as regular news updates that are edited by Julian Edison, a donor for this collection.

Every autumn, the Miniature Book Society hosts a conclave of its members in a different city around the world, though most often the locations are in the United States. Tours, workshops, guest speakers, auctions, and book fairs are just a few of the attractions that entice members to attend the three-day events. The 35th Conclave was hosted in San Francisco, California in 2017. Information on upcoming Miniature Book Society memberships, news, and conclaves can be found on their website, www.mbs.org.
