Abstract

W. J. McConnell served as president from 1934-1951. The papers in this collection document the issues that he dealt with, including student organization, school regulations, the faculty, and Board of Regents.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

Records of UNT President Weston J. McConnell (1884 - 1955).  This collection includes information on faculty, special projects, organizations, student laws and regulations, the School of Music, correspondence with the Board of Regents, World War II, clippings, and various organizations.

Biographical Note

Weston Joseph McConnell was the seventh President of the University of North Texas. He served from 1934-1951.

President McConnell was born April 12, 1884 in Batesville, Arkansas. He taught in rural schools and high schools in Wise county and Boyd.  He attended North Texas State Normal College and received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Denver. He started teaching at North Texas State Normal College in 1916 and finished his master's degree at Denver in summer sessions. He became a professor and then dean of the college in 1923. He received a Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1925. He was president of the Association of Texas Colleges, served on the executive council of the American Association of Teachers Colleges, and as president of the Council of Texas State Teachers College Presidents and the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. He was also elected as a fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Texas Academy of Science. He was elected President of North Texas State Teachers College following the death of President Marquis. (Biographical information from Rogers, James L. The Story of North Texas, 2002)
