A collection of historical photography in various formats from multiple periods.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection contains historical photographs from both the United States (with an emphasis on Texas) and England, consisting of over 150 years of photographic examples. Photos included are daguerreotypes and regular prints, in both color and black-and-white. Items in the collection range from individual portraits of the mid-19th century to autographed celebrity headshots from the 1990s. The inclusive dates of the collection are approximate, as many items are undated.

    • Series 1: Charles Dickens Photographs, 1855-1868Add to your cart.

      Accession Number: 2014-56

      Twenty photographs of famous novelist Charles Dickens. This set includes an albumen photograph bearing a blind-embossed stamp from the London Stereoscopic Company taken by George Herbert Watkins in 1861. Herbert Fry commissioned Watkins in 1856 to take photographs of various celebrities for Fry's series, National Gallery of Photographic Portraits. Watkins took several photographs of Dickens between 1858 and 1861, though Dickens declined any for use in Fry's series.

      Other photographs include those taken by C. Watkins, London; Mason & Co., London; and Gurney, New York. Additionally, one photograph is from an 1855 daguerrotype by Mayall, a photograph of an 1870 sketch of Dickens by Leslie Ward, and a photogravure of a photograph from 1867 by Mason & Co., London. Two documents are provided from the seller, containing the included information.

      Three daguerrotypes housed in small, ornamented cases with cushioned amd glass insides. Two have clasps that keep them closed securely; the other snaps open and shut.

      Scrapbook containing itinerary and photos from a North Texas State Teachers College (NTSTC, now UNT) Geography class trip to Natchez, MS

    • Series 6: Female factory worker and Star Trek Photographs, 1934-1999Add to your cart.

      Accession Number: 2018-001

      This set includes a 1934 photograph of a female factory worker sitting at her station. Various pieces of equipment line the background around her. A handwritten note on the back that reads, "Johanna in hosiery mill, Topping 1934."

      The remaining eight photographs are autographed headshots of various Star Trek actors from the original 1960s TV series, as well as its many spin-offs up through the 1990s. The end date is approximate.
