Photo mats from North Texas publications.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection includes photo mats and some accompanying newspaper clippings from North Texas publications, including the "Campus Chat," UNT's newspaper before the current "North Texas Daily" and the university yearbook from the 1940s. A large number were printed by Jaggars-Chiles Stovall, Inc. of Dallas, Texas.  Images on the molds include portraits, candid photos, and group photos of students, professors, and coaches. Some have handwritten names or notes along the mold's edge.

Collection Historical Note

Up until the mid-1960s, wood ad mats were molds used to create lead castings for letterpress printing. The casting was created by pouring hot lead onto the wood mat. After the lead cast cooled, it was secured to the press, where ink and then paper were placed on top. Finally, pressure was brought down on the casting to create the print on the paper. The wood ad mat molds were usually thrown away once the lead cast was made.

Biographical Note

The first student newspaper for the University of North Texas was published on November 1,  1916 under the name "The Campus Chat."  Initially the paper was published once a month during both semesters.  By the 1940s, the paper was printed every Wednesday and Friday.  In 1970 the paper's name was changed to the North Texas Daily.  The printing schedule was changed to Tuesday through Friday in the fall and spring and on Thursday during the summer while school was in session.  From 2006 to 2008 the "North Texas Daily Scene," a magazine style paper was published once a week.  In 2009 the "Scene" became an insert to the "North Texas Daily" once a week.  In 2009, "On the Record," a student magazine was published.  It is published once a month in the summer.
