Video footage of the Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade--the annual Dallas Gay Pride parade.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection contains 16 videos of the annual Dallas Gay Pride parade, known as the Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade. Footage shows revelers enjoying themselves along the parade route, as the floats and performers going by.

Collection Historical Note

The first Dallas Gay Pride parade occurred in 1972, with a small crowd of men and women nearing 3,000 people. The next one would not take place until 1980 when it was still struggling to find its feet, but starting in 1982, the newly created Dallas Tavern Guild took over the responsibility and saw the expansion of the parade and its festivities. In 1991, the parade was renamed in honor of Alan Ross, the guild's executive director who had managed the parade from its earliest stages. Ross was a founding member of the Dallas LGBT community and spent his time volunteering, as well as serving on the board of several LGBT organizations and non-profits during the 1980s and 1990s, including the Resource Center of Dallas.
