Collection Historical Note

José L. Castillo was born in 1970 and attended high school in Lima, Peru. During the early 1990s he studied translation and interpretation at the Escuela de Traducción e Interpretación de Lima (School of Translation and Interpretation of Lima). Afterwards, he continued his English studies at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in England. During his time in the United States, Mr. Castillo has worked as an editor, columnist, reporter, and media advisor in the Atlanta and Dallas-Fort Worth markets. He was the founder and former editor-in-chief of AtlantaLatino.com, currently Georgia’s largest bilingual portal to the Latino community. In March 2002, Mr. Castillo assembled a bilingual editorial staff and launched Atlanta Latino (Georgia), a weekly newspaper with identical content in both English and Spanish. In addition he has done freelance work for La Estrella (Fort Worth), the now defunct Latin Trade Magazine (Miami), HOY (New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles), and has translated columns into Spanish for the New York Times Syndicate. Mr. Castillo’s work has earned recognition from his colleagues and has been featured in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Gwinnett Daily Post (Georgia). He is a current member of the Colegio de Periodistas del Perú (Journalist Society of Peru), one of the most important journalist organizations in his native country, the American Association of Translators, and a former member of the Georgia Association of Latin American Journalists. As of this writing he is the Dallas-Fort Worth correspondent for EFE News Services, the fifth largest news wire in the world and a correspondent for La Republica (Lima, Peru).
