The majority of the collection is composed of 8mm and Super8 films shot by Dunlap in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas, Texas. The collection also includes audio recording projects, trims and outtakes, and empty boxes that have not been connected to specific film reels.

Collection Historical Note

James Blaine Dunlap grew up in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas, Texas, where he began making movies while still in grade school. Many of the short films represented in this collection were made under the name "Kaleidicine" productions. After graduating high school, Dunlap attended the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University. In the early 1970s, Dunlap began working in public television and continued to make films in and about Dallas with the assistance of grants from the Action Center City of Dallas. At this time, he began collaborating with filmmaker Ken Harrison on films about Texas art and artists, including Prince Albert Hunt (1974). Dunlap then moved to Tennessee, where he begam collaborating with documentary filmmaker Sol Korine on a series of films about folk culture and folk musicians. The audio recordings represented in this collection, including "Showdown at the Hoedown" and "Lucy Mai's Christmas" are from this time period.

Dunlap later moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, where he began a new phase in his career, preserving historic film and videotape through the Southeast Media Preservation Lab. Collection items were donated after being digitized as part of "Spotlight on North Texas," a regional media digitization project funded by a Common Heritage Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
