545 0  _aFrank Everson Vandiver was born in Austin, Texas. He joined the United states Army Air Corps and worked as a historian during World War II. He earned his master’s degree in 1949 from the University of Texas and his Ph.D. from Tulane in 1951. He started his career at Washington University in St. Louis. He then joined Rice University becoming a full professor in 1958.  In 1963-1964, Vandiver was the Vyvyan Harmsworth Professor of American History at Oxford University.  He served Rice for 24 years holding such positions as department chairman, master of Brown College, acting president (1969), provost and vice president and president. He left Rice in 1979.
            He then served as the president and chancellor of North Texas State University (1980-1981). He left to join Texas A and M as president. He served Texas A and M from 1981 to 1988. Vandiver established the Mosher Defense Studies Institute, a national defense think tank. When he left the presidency, he assumed emeritus status with the rank of distinguished professor.
            He authored or edited two dozen books, among them were [i]Mighty Stonewall [/i](1957[i]), Rebel Brass: The Confederate Command System[/i] (1956), [i]Jubal’s Raid: General Early’s Famous Attack on Washington in 1864 [/i](1960); [i]Blood Brothers: A Short History of the Civil War[/i] (1992); [i]Black Jack: The Life and Times of John J. Pershing[/i] (1977), [i]Shadows of Vietnam: Lyndon Johnson’s Wars[/i] (1997), [i]1001 Things Everyone Should Know About the Civil War [/i](1999), and [i]1001 Things Everyone Should Know About World War II ([/i]2000).
            Vandiver did not graduate from high school. In 1969, the Houston city schools presented his with his high school diploma.
