Historical Note: Jeanine Michna-Bales is a fine-art photographer and artist activist based in Dallas, TX. She holds a BS in advertising from University of Florida in Gainesville. Michna-Bales’s work has been featured in multiple publications both in print and online, including the New York Times Lens Blog, UK Daily Mail, In Sight by The Washington Post,, among others. Michna-Bales was included in the Critical Mass Top 50 in both 2014 and 2017. She received the 2016 Documentarian of The American south Collection Award from the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University. She also was awarded the top Portfolio Review Prize at PhotoNOLA 2015 and had a solo show at the New Orleans Photo Alliance Gallery the following year. Her photographs explore connections between past and present. The series Through Darkness to Light took over a decade to create and documents sites along the 1,400 miles of the Underground Railroad from Louisiana to Canada.
