Name: Winningham, Geoff

Historical Note: Geoff Winningham was born in Tennessee and currently lives in Houston, TX where he teaches photography at Rice University. He earned a BA in English from Rice University in 1963 and a MS Philosophy from Illinois Institute of Technology in 1968 and has taught photography at Rice since 1969. Winningham has ten books and three documentary films relating to Texas and Mexican culture. His photographs have exhibited and have been collected by major museums throughout U.S. and Mexico. Winningham’s photography and filmmaking has been supported by fellowships and awards, including two Guggenheim Fellowships and five grants from the National Endowments for the Arts. His work included in the Photography Study Collection, Friday Night in the Coliseum, is part of what he calls “American vernacular rituals” and depicts professional wrestling. These are classic studies in black and white photojournalism.
