Historical Note:

"Professor Emeritus Emerald Garrett Ballard, 79, of Denton, who served as chairman of the humanities division of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1965 to 1969 and taught English for 35 years at UNT until his retirement in 1977, died December 17, 1991.

            Dr. Ballard earned bachelor’s degrees in French and Latin in 1931 and a master’s degree in English in 1932 from the University of Mississippi. He earned a second master’s degree in English in 1935 an a doctorate in English language and literature in 1939 from the University of Illinois.

            A United States Navy veteran of World War II, he served from 1942 to 1946 and was part of the team that cracked Japanese naval codes. He was a member of the U. S. Naval Reserve and was promoted to commander before retiring in 1962.

            A member of the Denton United Fund budget committee form 1960 to 1962, he also served as chairman of the Civic Fund from 1948 to 1967 and represented UNT as a founder of the first Denton United Way."
