Name: Kamerick, John J. (1919-2015)

Historical Note: John J. Kamerick was named as President of North Texas State University (now the University of North Texas) in 1968.  Born in Ottumwa, Iowa in 1919, Kamerick studied and taught at universities in the Midwest and served in the Navy before moving into administrative work.  Previous to his appointment at NTSU, Kamerick served as academic vice president at Kent State University at Kent, Ohio.  During his short tenure as President of NTSU, Kamerick hired the university's first black administrator and oversaw university operations during a time of social unrest.  In 1970, Kamerick left NTSU and returned to his Midwestern roots by accepting the post of President of the University of Northern Iowa.
